Social Worker and Single Mom Needs Rent and Utility Assistance After Break-Up with 2 1/2 Year Old Daughter's Father Left- No Child Support- Stole 1,500
If you've ever gotten a hand up when you were down, then I'm asking YOU for help. Two months ago my fiancé and daughter's father packed up all his things and took $1562 out of our joint account and left suddenly. I have absolutely no legal recourse since it was a shared account. Without the $600-$700 dollars he was bringing into the household monthly, all of our utilities are close to disconnect and rent is past due and I don't have enough to cover it.
As if that wasn't bad enough, my daughter comes up to me every day and says "Daddy gone" just breaks my heart. She's only 2 1/2 years old and knows nothing about financial hardship, and that's something I would love to spare her from. Before my daughter was born about five years ago, I was homeless, uninsured, unemployed, hungry, cold, tired, and largely hopeless that my life would ever improve. I decided if I was goin'-out, I was goin'-out swinging. I took some life skills classes and learned to change everything about my life, including my attitude and perspective on the world. I got two jobs, health insurance and a home, and the knowledge that with enough hard work, determination and ingenuity a person can overcome almost any obstacle. I've actually been in a small documentary showing the day I moved in to my first apartment in years. It's on Vimeo at https://vimeo.com/29577953. My daughter is visible in the second follow up film a few years later, but you would have to click forward to 13 minutes and 30 seconds to see her.(https://vimeo.com/51411287)
I'm a social worker now. I teach homeless people how to get jobs and mentally ill folks how to manage their symptoms to engage in employment and prosocial activities such as volunteering. I volunteer managing a community garden providing food and education to at risk populations and I teach an art classes to homeless and displaced kids around my community. I believe every single person can improve their quality of life and that one person really can make the world a better place one action at a time.
I picked up some part-time hours on top of my full-time Social Work job and I'm posting everything that isn't nailed down on eBay to try and make up the difference in income and my missing savings, but it just hasn't been enough yet. I think of my daughter at the local new hope family homeless shelter and think I would do just about anything to prevent that from happening. I'm fairly certain that if I keep doing what I'm doing, in a few months I'll be able to support myself and my daughter again. A little help in the mean time could be the difference between my daughter learning first hand what homelessness is and her staying safe and warm in our home.
I don't anticipate any child support until the law finds him and he starts paying court mandated child support, which probably will be the state minimum knowing him, so won't be much.
I'm looking for a new place to live but in my community the 625 that I'm paying now in rent is about as cheap as a person can find. We just need a little bit of a hand up, so I can keep helping others up. Thank you for reading and God bless.
